The Earth Day Challenge invites young people internationally, working alone or in teams, to develop brief, two- to five-minute films that share their views on the earth’s future and the importance of combating climate change. Participants will win copies of An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, mobile devices by Nokia, Flip camcorders, laptop computers, and even a full digital arts workshop at their school hosted by the Mobile Learning Institute.

Who May Enter
Elementary school, middle school, and high school students anywhere as a part of a school or district organization, club, or class. Entries must be submitted through an MLI Earth Day Challenge camp or with the support of a teacher/advisor or other adult school/district staff member.

Entry Requirements
Entries must be received by the Challenge coordinators no later than September 1, 2008, and must include:
  • Your digital film: If the entry is being submitted on a media used in an MLI Earth Day Challenge camp, the native format is acceptable. If you wish to submit an edited film created elsewhere, that film must be submitted as a full quality/full frame (720 X 480 pixel) QuickTime/MOV, WMV, MPEG, AVI, or DVD format video delivered on CD, DVD, or tape to the Pearson Foundation (247 Miller Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941). Be sure to label your entry with the teacher contact name, school/organization name, student name, and project title. Save a copy for yourself: your entry will not be returned.
  • Completed and signed MLI Earth Day Challenge Entry Worksheet
  • Participant release form signed by the creator of the video and each person appearing in the video, as well as the appropriate parents or guardians. Entries that contain copyrighted material without permission or that fail to meet the minimum technical requirements will be disqualified from the Challenge.

Submitting Your Digital Film
All submissions can be made directly to MLI Earth Day Challenge Camps. If you are not in a camp, you can send your digital film to: Mobile Learning Institute Earth Day Challenge, Pearson Foundation, 247 Miller Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941

Winner Selection
Submissions are grouped by grade level: elementary/middle school (4–8), and high school (9–12). Entries will be judged only at their own grade level. Equivalent prizes are awarded to the winners in both categories – there is no overall winner.
Entries will be evaluated considering the following criteria:
  • Creativity (20%)
  • Content meets contest criteria (20%)
  • Overall presentation (20%)
  • Quality of narrative concept and image selection (20%)
  • Technical quality (20%)
Entries will be reviewed to determine whether the submission meets all entry requirements and passes baseline requirements. Digital films will be presented to judges for final scoring.

Submission Contact and Notification of Winners
Contestants can find out about the status of the MLI Earth Day Challenge at www.earthdaychallenge.org. Twenty-one entries will be selected for final review after September 1. The Grand Prize winner will be announced September 30, 2008, at www.pearsonfoundation.org, www.earthdaychallenge.org and www.mobilelearninginstitute.org.

Additional Rules and Regulations
No substitution or transfer of prizes permitted. No cash will be awarded in lieu of specific awards. All prizes will be awarded to the school district on behalf of the students producing the video entry. In the event that a participating group cannot accept the prize, an alternate winner will be selected by the contest coordinators based on the judging criteria outlined in these official contest rules. The Pearson Foundation reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value in the event that the prize offered is not available.
Ownership of the underlying intellectual property of the project remains with the entrant, with the following exceptions.
  • By entering the contest and/or accepting a prize, the entrant grants permission to the Pearson Foundation and its authorized agents to use the entrant’s name and/or likeness, statements, quotes, testimonials, and, if applicable, the name of entrant’s school and district name without further compensation to entrant.
  • Entrants also grant the Pearson Foundation and its authorized agents permission to use, reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, and/or display and exhibit, in any form or by any means, the entrant’s project video without further compensation to entrant.
  • The Pearson Foundation and its authorized agents maintain the right to reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, display, and exhibit the project for the purpose of promoting programs and technology to students, parents, and teachers on Pearson Foundation/authorized agent websites, and at educational conferences/events.
    By accepting prizes, winners agree to hold the Pearson Foundation and its respective directors, officers, employees, and assigns harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of such prizes. Winners assume all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be caused, from participation in this contest or use/redemption of any prize. Entrants agree to be bound by the official contest rules and the decisions of the judges.
    The Pearson Foundation and its authorized agents are not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the contest, or announcement of the prizes. A completed version of the release below must be completed for each video maker and for each person who appears in an entered video.
